I wanted to know if you could put some freshwater arthropod species in there and if they would be harmed by the mosquito dunks (which are a bacteria called BTI, or Bacillus thuringiensis var Israelensis). Multiple resources state that BTI is harmless to other insects and aquatic life (aside from one source saying it also kills black fly and fungus gnat larvae). However, I also found some other relevant info. According to this study, the presence of certain crustaceans like fairy shrimp and ostracods can have varying effects on the efficacy of BTI in controlling mosquito populations. Out of the three species tested (fairy shrimp and two ostracods), fairy shrimp and Cypridopsis vidua actually reduced mosquito larvae mortality through some unknown mechanism. They were not consuming the bacteria, but conferred some kind of protective effect to the larvae nonetheless (only seasonally though in the case of C. vidua). The other species tested, Heterocypris incongruens, did not reduce mosquito mortality, but that species preys upon the larvae.
So if you, like me, wanted to know if you could also put some little animal friends in there, perhaps only introduce predatory species or else you might be hindering your mosquito control.
